Stacked crushed cars at a scrap metal yard where end-of-life vehicle value is determined

What Is My Scrap Car Actually Worth in Sydney?

Updated

There is no reliable flat price for every scrap car in Sydney. A useful quote starts with the actual vehicle: its make, model, condition, what is still attached and where it needs to be collected.

Recycle Corp may pay for a vehicle by bank transfer or quote a removal fee, depending on the job. This guide explains what to send and what to ask so you can compare the complete arrangement.

What affects your car removal quote?

The vehicle and its condition

Send the rego, or make, model and year. Describe whether it starts, runs, rolls and steers. Those are separate questions, and each helps the operator understand what is being collected.

Mention damage and missing parts rather than assuming the photos show everything. A quote for a complete vehicle may not apply after major components have been removed. Do not dismantle the car just to find out what it is worth.

Recoverable material and usable parts

Vehicle weight and what can be salvaged help determine the value. Original purchase price and money spent on past repairs do not provide a dependable scrap-car valuation. There is also no universal rule that every vehicle of one brand will be worth more than another.

Location and collection access

Include your suburb and a photo showing how a tow truck can reach the car. A narrow driveway, low garage entrance, missing wheels or a vehicle on soft ground needs to be considered before the collection is booked.

Use our non-running car preparation checklist if access or condition is complicated.

Compare the final amount, not just the headline

An advertised “up to” figure is not a quote for your particular car. Ask each operator the same questions and keep the answer in writing:

  1. Who pays whom? Is there a payment to you or a removal fee?
  2. What does the amount include? Confirm towing and any access-related charges.
  3. What assumptions is it based on? Check which condition or access details could change the quote.
  4. How and when is payment made? Agree on the method and timing before handover.
  5. How long is the quote valid? Confirm it still applies to your proposed collection date.

Comparing these details is more useful than comparing a high headline amount with a quote that already accounts for your car and collection.

Why we say bank transfer for scrap vehicles

In NSW, scrap metal dealers cannot pay cash for scrap metal or advertise that they do. NSW Police explains the payment restrictions and record-keeping rules. Recycle Corp uses bank transfer when paying for a scrap vehicle.

Could selling the car be a better option?

If the vehicle still has useful life, compare a private sale or trade-in with removal. Consider its condition, realistic offers, repair costs and the time involved. There is no single dollar threshold that makes scrapping the right choice for everyone.

Our guide to getting rid of an old car in Sydney outlines the options. For an end-of-life car, start with a vehicle-specific quote rather than relying on a generic online price.
