How to Cancel Car Registration and Return Plates in NSW

Updated

When disposing of a car in NSW, first check whether you need registration cancellation or a notice of disposal. The answer depends on how the vehicle is being sold or disposed of, including whether number plates go with a sale to a wrecker.

Decide the paperwork before handover rather than relying on a general checklist that tells everyone to do both. Use the official links below for the current forms and requirements.

Selling to a wrecker: with plates or without?

Service NSW's notice-of-disposal guidance distinguishes these situations:

  • Sold to a wrecker with number plates: submit a notice of disposal.
  • Sold to a wrecker without number plates: cancel the registration; a notice of disposal is not required for that transaction.

If you remove the plates, return them to a Service NSW centre. For an already unregistered vehicle or an unusual ownership situation, ask Service NSW which steps apply rather than assuming the registered-vehicle process fits.

How to cancel registration in NSW

Use the official registration cancellation page to prepare your visit. It lists the forms, identity evidence, registration certificate if available, number plates, fee and any extra documents relevant to your case.

Lost, stolen or destroyed plates require a Police Event Number instead. If you want to retain a plate number, ask about putting the plates in reserve at a service centre; fees may apply.

Can you get a registration refund?

Service NSW allows an application for a refund of unused motor vehicle tax, with a cancellation fee. Do not treat the car removal quote as a calculation of your government refund. Ask Service NSW to confirm your eligibility and amount, and contact your insurer separately about the effect on your cover.

Agree on the handover details

Before the collection date, confirm who is buying or receiving the vehicle, whether plates are included, which documents are needed and who will be there to complete the handover. Keep the business details, agreed quote and collection receipt together.

If the vehicle belongs to an estate, a company or another person, or there is finance or disputed ownership involved, get the relevant authority and advice first. A towing booking does not by itself establish a right to dispose of the car.

Remove personal items and update accounts

  • Remove the toll tag and update the vehicle or registration details on your toll account
  • Check the glovebox, centre console, boot and seat pockets
  • Take your garage remote, parking permits, dashcam and memory card
  • Keep service records or other personal paperwork you need
  • Contact your insurer to update the policy

Our non-running car collection checklist also covers access, keys, wheels and photos to send before booking.
