A non-running car being winched onto a RecycleCorp tilt-tray tow truck in Sydney

Unregistered & Non-Running Car Removal in Sydney

The easiest legal way to get rid of an unregistered or non-running car in Sydney is to have it towed away from where it sits. You can't drive an unregistered car on the road, and a car that won't start can't make it to a wrecker on its own. The practical move is to cancel the registration and return the plates at Service NSW (if rego is still active), then book a removal service that comes to your address, loads the car, and recycles it. At Recycle Corp we do exactly that across Sydney — send a few photos and details and we'll come back with a fast, fixed quote.

Why you can't just drive it to a wrecker

It's tempting to think you'll "just drive it down the road" to a scrap yard. Two problems with that in NSW:

  • Unregistered. Driving an unregistered (and therefore uninsured) vehicle on a public road is an offence in NSW and can attract fines and demerit points. An unregistered vehicle permit exists for limited cases, but it's not meant to be a free pass for a junk car.
  • Non-running. A car that won't start, has flat or perished tyres, or is mechanically dead simply can't be driven anywhere — kerbside or otherwise.

That's why a removal service that comes to you is the sensible option: no driving, no risk, no towing it yourself.

Step 1: Sort out the registration and plates (if it's still registered)

If the car still has current or recently expired NSW registration, it's worth tidying up the paperwork before it leaves. This is handled through Service NSW, and it protects you from being chased for anything to do with the car after it's gone.

  1. Cancel the registration. You can cancel rego online through your MyServiceNSW account or in person at a service centre. Cancelling stops the car being "yours" on the system once it's disposed of.
  2. Return the number plates. When you cancel, you'll usually be asked to surrender the plates. Hand them in at a Service NSW centre or follow their return instructions. Don't leave plates attached to a car you're scrapping.
  3. Ask about any refund. Depending on how much registration is left, you may be entitled to a partial refund of rego and/or CTP (green slip). Service NSW and your CTP insurer can confirm — figures vary, so check rather than assume.

If the car is already unregistered and the plates are long expired, there's far less to do — but you should still keep any proof of ownership handy.

What to do with the plates

Short version: take the plates off and return them to Service NSW rather than letting them ride off on the truck. If you've paid for a personalised or custom plate you want to keep, remove it and store it — you can often hold or transfer it. Standard plates simply go back when you cancel.

Step 2: Get everything out of the car

Before removal day, give the car a once-over so nothing important disappears with it:

  • Personal items, paperwork, toll tags (e-tags) and parking permits.
  • Aftermarket gear you want to keep — dash cam, stereo, GPS, baby seats.
  • Glovebox and boot — registration papers, sunglasses, that phone charger you forgot about.

You don't need to clean it or fix anything. We take cars exactly as they are — flat battery, no wheels, sitting on the verge for months, written-off, whatever the condition.

Step 3: Get a quote — because price depends on the car

Here's the honest part. Car removal isn't always free, and it isn't always cash in hand — it depends on the vehicle. Some older cars have scrap or parts value; others cost something to clear, especially if access is tight or there's nothing salvageable left. We quote each car on its merits, so you know the number before anything moves.

To get a fast, fixed price, send us a few details:

  • Make, model and rough year.
  • Whether it runs, rolls and steers.
  • A couple of photos (front, side, and the spot it's parked).
  • The pickup suburb and how accessible the car is (driveway, street, underground car park).

That's it. You can get a fast car-removal quote with those details and we'll come straight back with a fixed figure — no call-out fee, no surprises on the day.

Step 4: We come to you and tow it away

Once you're happy with the quote, we book a time that suits — often same day across Sydney. Our crew arrives, loads the car (running or not), and takes it off your hands. You don't lift, push or tow anything. Our yard is in Bankstown, so we cover Sydney metro comfortably.

From there the car is processed responsibly — fluids handled correctly and as much as possible recycled rather than dumped. We divert up to around 90% of what we handle from landfill, and end-of-life vehicles are no different. You can read more about how we recycle if that matters to you (it should).

Quick checklist

  • Cancel rego at Service NSW (if still registered) and ask about any refund.
  • Remove and return the number plates.
  • Clear out personal items, e-tags and anything aftermarket.
  • Get a fast car-removal quote with photos and details.
  • We come to you, load it, and recycle it.
