Will the Store Take Your Old Fridge or Washing Machine? Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and Appliances Online
Updated
Share
Yes — Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and Appliances Online all offer to take your old fridge or washing machine, but only when they deliver a new one of a similar type and size, only if you've chosen (and sometimes paid for) the delivery option that includes removal, and only if the old one is disconnected, empty and clean when the truck arrives. A second fridge, a machine you're not replacing, or anything that isn't ready on the day stays with you.
Here's what Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and Appliances Online say on their own websites, the catches, and what to do when the store can't take it.
Small–medium fridge or freezer $80 · washing machine $80 · large fridge $150. Any age, working or not, collected anywhere in Sydney with no call-out fee. Book a fridge or washing machine pickup →

Harvey Norman
Harvey Norman's delivery page describes a "premium home appliances delivery" that covers delivery, installation and "the removal of your old appliances and packaging". There's no published price — the page says your local store partners with trade professionals and to contact the store to discuss pricing. The fine print sets out the conditions:
- Like-for-like: "Products removed must be of equivalent size and quantity to the products purchased." Buy one fridge, and one fridge goes.
- You disconnect it: "Disconnection of old appliance not included."
- It can be refused: the franchise or its delivery contractors can refuse removal if the products are "soiled, wet and/or pose an OHS risk" — and a half-defrosted freezer is wet.
Handy if you're in a rush: an in-stock fridge or washing machine ordered from your local store by 3pm on a weekday can be delivered the next day, within 25 kilometres of the store. Harvey Norman delivery (checked 28 Sep 2026).
JB Hi-Fi
JB Hi-Fi's standard appliance delivery ($59 metro) takes the new fridge or washer to your room of choice. Removal comes with the delivery add-ons that include it — "Deliver and remove" at $79 and "Deliver, unpack and remove" at $89, both listed for metro areas — and covers an "old appliance of similar type and size". JB says old appliances removed with its premium delivery go to its e-waste recycling partners, for metro deliveries. JB Hi-Fi home appliance delivery (checked 28 Sep 2026).
Its home delivery terms (checked 28 Sep 2026) are specific:
- The old appliance must be empty and clean, disconnected from power and water, and "readily available for easy removal". JB's delivery prep page adds that it should be moved into an accessible place.
- Gas or hard-wired disconnections must already have been done by a licensed tradesperson — JB won't disconnect them.
- Someone over 18 has to be there to authorise the removal.
- JB can refuse to remove the old one if the truck can't park within 20 metres of your entrance — worth thinking about on a busy Inner West street or at an apartment block without a loading zone.
Appliances Online
Appliances Online advertises removal of your old, disconnected appliance at no extra charge when it delivers the new one. It's available in metropolitan areas and selected regional centres where it delivers with its own trucks, and you have to select the Removal option in the cart at checkout — easy to miss if you're ordering quickly. The conditions: the old appliance must be similar to the new one, fully disconnected from power, water and gas (gas by a licensed plumber) before they arrive, clean and hygienic, and somewhere it can be removed safely. If you've also booked its installers to connect the new appliance, they'll disconnect the old one at the same time. Appliances Online delivery service (checked 28 Sep 2026).
Other stores
We couldn't confirm The Good Guys' or Bing Lee's current removal terms on their own websites when we checked (28 Sep 2026), so we haven't described them here. For those and any other retailer, ask these questions before you pay:
- Is removal included, or is it a paid option — and how much?
- Does it have to be the same type and size as what I'm buying?
- Do I need to disconnect it, and who does the gas or hard-wired disconnection?
- Does it need to be empty, defrosted and dry?
- Where does it need to be — can they collect from upstairs or a garage?
When the store won't take it
Retailer take-back is built around a straight swap on delivery day. It doesn't cover the common Sydney situations:
- The old kitchen fridge that's become the garage fridge. You're not replacing it, so nothing gets taken. If it's running half-empty out there, our piece on the old fridge in the garage does the sums.
- Not like-for-like. Bought a fridge but want the old washing machine gone too? The retailer rules above tie removal to what's being delivered.
- You forgot to choose removal at checkout, or the option wasn't available for your postcode.
- It isn't ready on the day. A freezer that's still dripping, a washer with water in the drum, or a fridge nobody's unplugged can be left behind.
- You're moving, redoing the kitchen or selling the house and aren't buying a replacement at all.
That's where a separate pickup is easier. It's $80 for a small–medium fridge or freezer, $80 for a washing machine and $150 for a large fridge, collected from the kerbside. Please arrange for it to be safely placed outside at the kerbside before pickup; our team does not carry items from inside homes or on stairs. We work Monday to Friday, 6am–4pm, from our yard in Bankstown. Book before noon and we can often come the same day; otherwise it's usually within 24–48 hours. You can book it for the morning of delivery so the old one is out before the new one comes in. For washers specifically, our washing machine disposal guide covers the other options. (We collect fridges, freezers and washing machines — not dryers, dishwashers, ovens or air conditioners.)
Getting the old one ready — whoever takes it
These steps match what the retailers ask for, and they make any pickup quicker:
- Empty it the day before, and take out loose shelves or tape them in place.
- Defrost the freezer a full day ahead, then mop up. Retailers can refuse a wet or dirty one.
- Unplug it and coil the cord. For a washing machine, turn off the taps, disconnect the hoses and drain the drum.
- Measure the route — doorways, stairs, the lift — especially if the new one is bigger. Our new fridge delivery checklist walks through it.
- Clear a path and, in an apartment, book the lift and loading dock with building management.
Frequently asked questions
Does Harvey Norman take old fridges?
Harvey Norman's premium home appliance delivery includes removal of old appliances, arranged through your local store, which sets the price. The old appliance must be of equivalent size and quantity to what you bought, you have to disconnect it, and removal can be refused if it's soiled or wet.
Does JB Hi-Fi remove your old fridge or washing machine?
Yes, if you choose a delivery option that includes removal — "Deliver and remove" ($79) or "Deliver, unpack and remove" ($89), both listed for metro areas. The old appliance must be a similar type and size, empty, clean and disconnected.
Do Appliances Online take your old fridge?
They advertise removal at no extra charge where they deliver with their own trucks, but you must select the Removal option at checkout. The old appliance must be similar to the new one, fully disconnected, clean and safely accessible.
Will they take my old fridge if I'm not buying a new one?
Not under the terms we checked — each retailer ties removal to the delivery of a similar new appliance. For a fridge or washing machine you're not replacing, book a pickup instead: $80, or $150 for a large fridge.
Do I need to defrost my fridge before they take it?
Yes. JB Hi-Fi asks for it to be empty and clean, Appliances Online for clean and hygienic, and Harvey Norman's delivery contractors can refuse wet items. Defrost the freezer a full day ahead and mop up.
