Old fridge running in a double garage in the Hills District

Fridge Removal Castle Hill & The Hills District — From $80

Updated

Fridge and freezer removal across The Hills District starts at $80 — degassed under licence and recycled for metal. Out here, it's almost always the garage fridge.

Double garages mean second fridges

The Hills has some of the largest homes in Sydney, and nearly all of them have a double garage. Which means nearly all of them have somewhere to put the old fridge when the kitchen gets renovated.

So it goes to the garage, gets plugged in, and runs for the next decade holding drinks and overflow. It feels free. It isn't.

The Hills summer problem

The Hills runs consistently hotter than coastal Sydney in summer — several degrees on a bad day — and an uninsulated garage with a west-facing roller door and a metal roof compounds it. Internal temperatures well past 45°C are routine in February.

A fridge doesn't create cold, it moves heat out. The hotter the room, the longer the compressor runs. An old unit in those conditions can cost $200 to $400 a year in electricity — more out here than in a cooler garage closer to the coast.

The test: unplug it for two weeks. If nobody notices, that's your answer. Full breakdown.

Chest freezers too

The other Hills staple, and worse on the same maths — freezers run colder and work harder. Priced like fridges ($80 small–medium, $150 large), same trip. More on chest freezers.

Preparing it

  1. Empty and unplug a full day ahead, especially a freezer
  2. Prop the door or lid open with towels around the base
  3. Bail out the meltwater before pickup — a chest freezer can hold several litres
  4. Leave the doors on — we don't need them removed
  5. Arrange for the fridge to be safely placed outside at the kerbside before pickup

Access

Collection is kerbside only, normally within 24–48 hours, Monday to Friday, 6am–4pm. For newer apartments around Castle Towers, Norwest and the Metro stations, arrange any service lift and building access needed to have the fridge safely placed outside at the kerbside before pickup.

The Hills Shire Council rules

The Hills Shire Council runs booked bulky collections with an annual limit per household. Items may only go on the nature strip once you've booked a specific date — anything else is illegal dumping and it's fineable.

Most councils that accept fridges also require the doors removed or taped for child safety. And the bigger issue remains the gas: every fridge holds refrigerant in a sealed circuit that must be recovered by a licensed handler before crushing. Why that matters.

What we take

Fridges, bar fridges, wine fridges, upright freezers and chest freezers — $80 for a small–medium unit, $150 for a large one, working or not. Two or three in one trip are simply priced per unit.

A washing machine or an old TV can go in the same trip. We don't take dryers, dishwashers, ovens or air conditioners.
