Fridge & Freezer Removal in Sydney (Disposal Done Right)

Updated

The right way to get rid of a fridge in Sydney is to book a pickup that degasses the unit and recycles the metal — not to leave it on the kerb without a booked collection. Every fridge and freezer holds refrigerant gas that must be recovered by a licensed handler before the shell is scrapped, and in most Sydney council areas a fridge left on the nature strip without a booked collection counts as illegal dumping. The simple move is to book a pickup from $80, arrange for it to be safely placed outside at the kerbside before pickup, and know it gets recycled properly.

Why you can't just put a fridge on the kerb

It feels like the obvious option — wheel it out to the nature strip and let someone deal with it. In Sydney that usually goes wrong for two reasons.

  • It's often illegal dumping. Most Sydney councils only allow large items on the nature strip when you've booked a specific collection for a set date. Putting a fridge out at any other time can be treated as illegal dumping and fined — and fridges are a classic target, because they're heavy, obvious and impossible to deny.
  • The refrigerant gas is the real problem. Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant in a sealed circuit that has to be recovered by a licensed technician before the unit is crushed. A fridge baking on the kerb in the sun, or getting tipped into the back of a truck, can leak that gas straight into the atmosphere. That's exactly what the rules exist to prevent.

There's a safety angle too. An abandoned fridge with the door still attached is a genuine suffocation hazard for children, which is why councils that do accept fridges almost always require the doors removed or taped shut first.

What we take — and what we don't

We collect fridges and freezers of every type. That includes:

  • Standard and French-door fridges
  • Bar fridges and mini fridges
  • Upright freezers
  • Chest freezers
  • Fridge-freezer combinations

We don't take dryers, dishwashers, ovens or air conditioners. Refrigeration is a specialised job — degassing, licensed handling, proper metal recovery — and we'd rather do it properly than take everything and do it badly.

Washing machines and TVs too

A washing machine or an old TV can go in the same trip as the fridge: $80 for a washing machine or a small–medium TV, $150 for a large TV, all booked on the same appliance pickup page. If it's just the TV, our guide to getting rid of an old TV in Sydney covers the other options.

Degassing: the part you don't see

This is the whole reason fridge disposal is a job worth doing properly.

Before a fridge or freezer can be scrapped, a licensed handler recovers the refrigerant from the sealed system. Older units may still contain ozone-depleting gases. Newer ones carry refrigerants with a serious global-warming impact — in some cases thousands of times that of carbon dioxide, kilo for kilo. Either way, the gas has to be captured rather than vented, so it can be destroyed or reclaimed. Only after degassing does the shell go off to be shredded.

When you book with us, that whole chain is handled. The unit goes to facilities that degas and dismantle refrigeration properly, so the gas is dealt with and the metals are recovered. See how our recycling works.

Where your old fridge actually ends up

Once the gas is out, a fridge is essentially a block of valuable metal. Steel, copper and aluminium are separated and sent for recycling, which beats landfill on every measure — it recovers materials, uses far less energy than mining and smelting new metal, and keeps a bulky, non-degradable object out of the ground.

It's the same principle behind e-waste recycling: appliances and electronics are full of recoverable materials plus a few components you really don't want leaching into soil, so they belong in a proper recycling stream.

Your options for getting rid of a fridge in Sydney

1. Book a pickup (we come to you)

A kerbside pickup saves you transporting the fridge yourself. Please arrange for it to be safely placed outside at the kerbside before pickup; our team does not carry items from inside homes, on stairs or from apartments. We collect it and take it away to be degassed and recycled. No ute or trailer needed. $80 for a small–medium unit, $150 for a large one, collected within 24–48 hours.

2. Retailer take-back on delivery

If you're buying a new fridge, some retailers will remove the old one when they deliver. Worth asking — but it only works if a replacement is arriving, it usually costs extra, and the old unit has to be emptied, defrosted and disconnected before they'll touch it.

3. Council collection

Most Sydney councils offer a limited number of booked bulky collections a year. Low cost, but you wait for a scheduled date, there are annual limits, and not every council accepts fridges the same way — many require the doors off first. Check your council's rules before putting anything out.

4. Scrap metal yard (DIY)

If you can transport it, a scrap yard may take it. But you're loading and driving a 60–100kg appliance yourself, and a gas-charged fridge still has to reach somewhere licensed to degas it — many yards won't accept one that hasn't been.

How much does fridge removal cost in Sydney?

With us it's $80 for a small–medium fridge or freezer, $150 for a large one. No call-out fee, no fuel levy, and no price change on the day. Booking two or three at once is simply priced per unit, so an old fridge plus a garage chest freezer is simple to sort in one trip.

Adding a mattress to the same booking is common — that's a flat $80 per mattress, any size.

Large French-door, side-by-side and built-in fridges ($150)

French-door, side-by-side and built-in fridges are the ones people struggle most to shift themselves, and the ones most likely to need a little prep before the crew arrives. A large fridge is $150 for kerbside collection. Not sure whether yours counts as large? Call 0428 01 01 01 and we'll confirm the price before you book.

  • Arrange for the fridge to be safely placed outside at the kerbside before pickup — our team does not carry it from inside or on stairs
  • Release any cabinetry panel — if the fridge is built in or boxed in by joinery, free it from any panels or fixings so it can slide straight out
  • Turn off the water line — if it has an ice maker or water dispenser, turn off the water supply and disconnect the line before pickup

How to prepare your fridge for pickup

  1. Empty it — all food, shelves loose or removed, nothing rattling around
  2. Defrost it a day ahead if it's a freezer, and mop up the meltwater
  3. Unplug it and coil the cord so it isn't a trip hazard
  4. Leave the doors on — unlike a council collection, we take it straight onto the truck, so there's no need to remove them
  5. Tell us about kerbside access — the collection point and where a truck can stop

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a fridge out for council collection?

Sometimes — but only when you've booked a collection for a set date, and only if your council accepts fridges that way. Many require the doors removed or taped for safety. Putting a fridge on the kerb without a booking can be treated as illegal dumping and fined, so check your council's specific rules first.

Do you degas the fridge, or do I need to arrange it?

We arrange it. When we collect a fridge or freezer, it goes to a facility that recovers the refrigerant under licence before the metal is recycled. You don't need to organise a separate technician or do anything to the unit — just have it emptied and safely placed outside at the kerbside before pickup.

Will you take a fridge from an apartment or down stairs?

No. Collection is kerbside only. Please arrange for the fridge to be safely taken downstairs and placed outside at the kerbside before pickup; our team does not carry items from inside homes, on stairs or from apartments.

Do you take a fridge that still works?

Yes. Plenty of the units we collect still run — they're just old, inefficient or surplus. A fridge from the early 2000s can use several times the power of a modern one, so replacing it often pays for itself.

What about washing machines, dryers or air conditioners?

Washing machines, yes — $80 each, and they can go in the same trip. We don't take dryers, dishwashers, ovens or air conditioners.
