Sydney Council Collection Rules for Mattresses, Fridges, Sofas and TVs (2026)
Updated
Share
The single rule that catches most people out: in almost every Sydney council area, you may only place items on the nature strip once you have booked a collection for a specific date. Putting something out early, or without a booking at all, is illegal dumping — and it's fineable, even if a truck eventually collects it.
Beyond that, every council sets its own rules: how many collections you get, how long you wait, and how it handles mattresses, fridges, lounges and TVs. The two tables below compare eight Sydney councils for the items we collect, taken from each council's own website (checked 28 Sep 2026). Rules change, so check your council's page before you book.
Booked collections by council: allowance, booking and wait
| Council | Collections a year | How to book, and the wait | Before you put it out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blacktown | Up to 12 a year, no extra fee | Online or 02 5300 6000. You get the next available date, which may be up to 4 weeks away | One box-trailer load. Out no earlier than the night before. Someone must be living at the property, and bookings from strata or real estate managers aren't accepted |
| Canterbury-Bankstown | 2 per calendar year for houses and blocks of five or fewer units, up to 3 m³ each | Online or 02 9707 9000. The council says allow up to three weeks; its booking site says usually 2–6 weeks. Book by 15 December to use this year's allowance | Out the day before. Blocks of six or more units book through the building manager or strata |
| City of Sydney | A booked pick-up every week, free for residents | Online. Book by 2pm the day before your area's collection day | Up to 1 m³ per booking for a house. Out the night before. Crews won't collect from your driveway, porch or front yard. Apartments book through the building manager where there is one |
| Parramatta | Up to 4 pre-booked a year, or scheduled collections, depending on your address | Online or Veolia on 1300 580 811. The next date may be up to four weeks away | Under 2 m³, liftable by two people, out only the day before. Only for homes that receive the council's domestic waste service |
| Northern Beaches | 2 within 12 months of your first booking (mainland households paying the domestic waste charge) | Online or 1300 434 434. Not available in the last week of December, and waits are longer over summer | Up to 3 m³, out the night before. Bookings belong to the property, so a new owner or tenant may have to wait |
| Fairfield | Up to 4 a year | Online or (02) 9725 0222. Book at least 2 weeks ahead | Up to 2 m³, out no earlier than 24 hours before. Buildings of 12 or more units go through their managing body. If nothing is put out, the booking still counts |
| The Hills | 2 per calendar year; extra services $165 each (FY 26/27) | Cleanaway booking portal or the Waste Hotline, 1800 623 895. Your date should fall 14–28 days after you book | Out the night before. Units and townhouses book through the strata manager. The allowance doesn't reset for a new owner or tenant |
| Inner West | No yearly number stated; a limited number of spots each day | Online booking portal, with a separate booking for each category | Up to 2 m³, out the evening before, on the street (not inside your property boundary). Only for properties paying the domestic waste charge |
How each council handles mattresses, fridges, lounges and TVs
| Council | Mattresses | Fridges and washing machines | Sofas and lounges | TVs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blacktown | Collected separately by contractors: allow up to 2 business days after your date. There's a mattress-only booking | Collected separately: allow up to 5 business days. Fridge doors off or taped shut | Keep furniture whole; nothing two people can't safely carry | Not collected: the council treats e-waste as problem waste |
| Canterbury-Bankstown | Only if added to your booking, which gives you a separate mattress booking number. Place it apart from the other items | Accepted, with doors removed | Lounges accepted; "large or heavy items" are refused | Accepted (batteries aren't) |
| City of Sydney | Their own group (Group 1), any size or condition | Group 3. Fridges emptied, doors taped shut | Group 2 | Accepted in Group 3 |
| Parramatta | No longer than 2 metres | Fridge and freezer doors or locks removed; fridges may be collected separately | No longer than 2 metres, and liftable by two people | Not picked up: the council points you to its e-waste options |
| Northern Beaches | Accepted | Accepted with doors removed, in a separate pile | Accepted, but nothing over 1.8 m long or too heavy for two people (40 kg max) | Not accepted |
| Fairfield | Two per collection | Accepted; fridge doors tied shut or removed | Must be liftable by two staff | "Electronic items" are accepted, but TVs aren't named, so check when you book |
| The Hills | Their own pile, stacked neatly | Their own pile, under 300 litres, with fridge and freezer doors removed | With other furniture; two people must be able to handle it easily | Not on the council's accepted list |
| Inner West | Book the separate mattress category (the council sends them to Soft Landing and Mattress Recycler) | Book the separate metal and appliance category; fridge doors and locks removed | The furniture category is for broken furniture, and the council says it goes straight to landfill | Not on the council's accepted list |

Why the fridge rule exists
Two separate reasons that both matter.
Child safety. A discarded fridge with a working door seal is a genuine suffocation hazard. That's why doors have to come off or be taped.
Refrigerant. Every fridge and freezer contains gas in a sealed circuit that must be recovered by a licensed handler before the unit is crushed. Older units may hold ozone-depleting gases; newer ones hold refrigerants with a heavy global-warming impact. A fridge tipped into a compactor truck can vent its whole charge at once, which is exactly what a general bulky collection risks. More on how fridge disposal should work.
Will council take my mattress, couch, fridge or TV?
Mattress
All eight councils above take mattresses, but several handle them apart from the rest of the pile: a separate booking or category in Canterbury-Bankstown and the Inner West, a separate pickup up to 2 business days later in Blacktown, and a limit of two per collection in Fairfield. If you'd rather not wait for a date, our mattress pickup is $80 flat, any size, collected from the kerbside.
Couch or lounge
Generally yes, as furniture, but it has to be light enough for two people to lift in Blacktown, Parramatta, Fairfield, the Northern Beaches and The Hills, and Blacktown asks you to keep it whole. Parramatta caps length at 2 metres and the Northern Beaches at 1.8 metres. In the Inner West, the furniture category is for broken furniture and goes straight to landfill.
Fridge or washing machine
Usually yes, with conditions. Every council above wants fridge doors removed or taped shut, and several collect fridges separately from the rest of the pile: up to 5 business days later in Blacktown. The Hills only takes appliances under 300 litres, so check the capacity of a large fridge before you book.
TV
It depends on the council. The City of Sydney and Canterbury-Bankstown take TVs in a booked collection; Blacktown, Parramatta and the Northern Beaches don't; The Hills and the Inner West don't list them; and Fairfield lists "electronic items" without naming TVs. NSW doesn't have a statewide ban on binning e-waste (Victoria does), but it shouldn't go in any household bin: anything with a battery can start a fire in the garbage truck, and TVs and computers can be recycled for free through the national scheme. What the NSW rules actually say.
Missed your council collection, or used up your allowance?
- Wait for the next one. Canterbury-Bankstown and The Hills reset each calendar year; on the Northern Beaches it's 12 months from your first booking.
- Pay for an extra collection, where your council offers one. The Hills charges $165 per extra service (FY 26/27).
- Book a fixed-price pickup. Each item at its own price (below), or a full truckload of mattresses, sofas and appliances for $1,000 if a lot is going at once.
Putting it out without a booking can be fined
Parramatta, The Hills and the City of Sydney all say on their own websites that items put out without a booking, or too early, can be treated as illegal dumping and fined. More on illegal dumping penalties in NSW.
When the council option is the right one
- You're not in a hurry and can wait for the allocated date
- You haven't used your annual allocation
- You live in a house rather than a strata block
- The item is something your council actually accepts
- You can carry it to the kerb yourself
When it isn't
- You need it gone this week — booked dates can be weeks out in busy periods
- It's a car — not an option at all
- It's a TV — several councils won't take it at the kerb
- You're in an apartment — you generally can't book it yourself
- You need help getting it outside — arrange a suitable mover separately; both council and Recycle Corp bulky-item collections require items at the kerbside
- You've used your allocation, or you're a tenant and the landlord has
What we do instead
We collect specific items: mattresses, sofas, appliances, e-waste and cars. Each has a fixed or quoted price. Bulky-item collection is kerbside only: arrange for items to be outside at the kerbside before pickup. We operate Monday to Friday, 6am–4pm:
- Mattresses — $80 flat, any size, any condition
- Sofas and lounges — $80 for an armchair, $180 for a 2–3 seater, $300 for a 4–5 seater or modular
- Fridges and freezers — $80 for a small–medium unit, $150 for a large one, degassed under licence
- Washing machines and TVs — from $80 ($150 for a large TV)
- Cars — quoted on the vehicle, towed from where they sit
- Electronics and e-waste — $80 flat per load
- A full truckload of bulky items — $1,000 for mattresses, sofas and appliances together, if you've used up your council allowance
Frequently asked questions
Can I put my mattress out today and book the collection later?
No. That's the exact sequence that gets fined. Book first, then put it out shortly before the date.
Will the council take my car?
No. Councils never collect vehicles. Leaving one on the street risks impoundment at your cost.
Does a council collection cost anything?
Not within your allowance at the councils above: Blacktown, for example, says there's no extra fee for its 12 a year. Extra collections can cost: The Hills charges $165 per extra service (FY 26/27).
How many council collections do I get a year?
It depends on the council: two a year in Canterbury-Bankstown and The Hills, two in any 12 months on the Northern Beaches, up to four in Parramatta and Fairfield, up to 12 in Blacktown, and a booked pick-up every week in the City of Sydney (council websites, checked 28 Sep 2026).
I'm renting — can I book one?
Usually yes for a house: Blacktown, for example, takes bookings from owners or tenants living at the property. But the allowance belongs to the property, and on the Northern Beaches and in The Hills it doesn't reset when a new tenant moves in. In an apartment block it's typically the building manager or strata who books, except in Blacktown, which doesn't accept bookings from strata or real estate managers.
Need it gone sooner?
Fixed prices, kerbside collection only. Please arrange for items to be outside at the kerbside before pickup. Collections run Monday to Friday, 6am–4pm. Same-day is often possible if you book before noon; otherwise 24–48 hours on service days.
