Do Mattress Stores Take Your Old Mattress? IKEA, Amart, Ecosa & More (Sydney 2026)
Updated
Share
Some mattress stores will take your old mattress away, but almost always only when you buy a new one from them, for a fee, and with the old one bagged and waiting outside on delivery day. IKEA and Amart offer it with a new mattress, Ecosa sells a separate collection, and Fantastic Furniture says it can't remove old mattresses on delivery.
Here's what each store's own website says (all checked 28 Sep 2026), the catches to watch for, and what to do if the store won't take yours.
No new purchase needed, any condition, and kerbside collection only. Please arrange for the mattress to be safely placed outside at the kerbside before pickup. Often same day if you book before noon, otherwise 24–48 hours. Book a mattress pickup →
Store by store: who takes the old mattress
Does IKEA take old mattresses?
Yes, but only when you order a new mattress from IKEA, and how it works depends on where you buy it:
- In store (or through IKEA's remote selling team): you organise delivery and mattress removal together when you buy. IKEA gives you a bag to put the old mattress in (on remote orders, the delivery driver brings it). IKEA's mattress help page puts it at $55 per mattress removed (checked 28 Sep 2026).
- Online: you book the removal yourself with IKEA's partner — for NSW, its page links to Soft Landing. IKEA says booking with its partners costs "starting from $69", and the removal and the new-mattress delivery are done by different providers, so check when each will happen.
The service runs in NSW, the ACT, Victoria, WA and SA, but not Queensland. IKEA mattress removal (checked 28 Sep 2026).
Amart Furniture — $89, in-store purchases only
Amart charges a flat $89 to remove an old mattress or ensemble base, whatever the size, but only when you buy a new Amart mattress, ensemble or base in store — its removal service is "exclusively available for in-store purchases". The old one doesn't have to be from Amart or the same size. It must be bagged using Amart's instructions and left outside — driveway, porch or similar — when the new one is delivered. Miss that and there's no second go: Amart says there "won't be an opportunity to reschedule the removal". An extra mattress costs more. If you're collecting your new mattress yourself, you can drop the bagged old one at the store or distribution centre instead. Amart mattress removal (checked 28 Sep 2026).
Ecosa — a separate recycling collection
Ecosa sells mattress recycling as a separate booking on its website, in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. When we checked, it was listed at $125 for a queen, and the booking button showed "Out Of Stock", so check availability. By default you leave the mattress outside your house. Collection from inside costs "a slightly higher fee", and even then the crew only goes into "the immediate area from your front door". Ecosa accepts any size and condition, including damaged, but collections pause from 16 December to 6 January. Ecosa mattress recycling (checked 28 Sep 2026).
Does Fantastic Furniture take your old mattress?
No. Fantastic Furniture's help centre says: "We are unable to assist with the removal of old mattresses and furniture when delivering your order." The only exception is a warranty exchange, where it collects the item being returned. Fantastic Furniture help centre (checked 28 Sep 2026).
Koala — packaging removal, not old furniture
Koala's premium delivery service includes assembly and "Removal of all packaging for responsible recycling", but the same page says it "Does not include old furniture removal", and it doesn't describe collecting an old mattress. Koala delivery options (checked 28 Sep 2026).
Other mattress stores
Plenty of other bedding stores and department stores sell mattresses in Sydney. We couldn't confirm their current policies from their own websites, so we haven't listed them. Ask in store before you pay — the questions below will tell you quickly whether their take-away suits you.
The catches with store take-away
- You usually have to buy a new mattress. IKEA and Amart only take one away with a new mattress purchase, and Amart only for in-store purchases.
- It has to be ready and outside. Amart wants it bagged and outside on delivery day; Ecosa's standard collection is from outside your house. If you're in an apartment or upstairs, you're carrying it down first.
- Miss the window and it stays with you. Amart won't reschedule a missed removal.
- Two companies, two days. IKEA says online removal and delivery are handled by different providers.
- One-for-one. Amart removes like for like, with extra items costing more. A spare single in the kids' room may not be included.
- Holiday gaps. Ecosa's collections stop from 16 December to 6 January.
Questions to ask the store before you buy
- Do you take the old mattress away, and what does it cost?
- Is it only for in-store orders, or online too?
- Will it be taken on the same visit as the new delivery?
- Does it need to be bagged, and where do I leave it — outside, or can you take it from the bedroom?
- What happens if it isn't ready when the truck comes?
- Can you take more than one?
When booking your own pickup is simpler
Store take-away works well if you're buying a new mattress from a store that offers it, and you can bag it and get it outside for delivery day. Booking a separate pickup is simpler when:
- You bought online, secondhand, or from a store that doesn't offer removal. Our pickup doesn't depend on where the new mattress came from — or on buying one at all.
- It's upstairs. Arrange for it to be safely taken downstairs and placed outside at the kerbside before pickup; our team does not carry items from inside homes, on stairs or from apartments.
- There's more than one. It's $80 per mattress, any size, so a queen and two singles is $240.
- The timing doesn't line up. Book for the morning the new one arrives, or after it's in. You don't need to be home.
- It's soiled or damaged. Any condition is fine, and it doesn't change the price.
We take mattresses only — not bases, frames or ensembles. If your old mattress is near-new and clean, it may be worth trying to donate it first. If you're not in a hurry, your council may collect it at no extra charge: see our comparison of council mattress collections in Sydney. Frequently asked questions
Does IKEA take old mattresses in Sydney?
Yes, when you order a new IKEA mattress. Buy in store and IKEA organises removal with your delivery for $55 per mattress and gives you a bag for the old one. Buy online and you book removal with IKEA's partner (for NSW, Soft Landing), which IKEA says costs from $69.
Does Fantastic Furniture take your old mattress?
No. Fantastic Furniture says it's unable to remove old mattresses or furniture when delivering an order, except for items being returned under a warranty exchange.
Do I have to buy a new mattress for a store to take the old one?
Usually. IKEA and Amart only offer removal with a new mattress purchase. Ecosa sells mattress recycling as a separate booking. If you're not buying from a store that offers removal, a council collection or a paid pickup are the usual options.
What should I do with my old mattress after buying a new one?
Ask the store about removal before you pay. If they don't offer it, or the conditions don't suit you, book a council collection if you can wait, donate it if it's genuinely near-new, or book a pickup for the day the new one arrives.
