Cot and Kids' Mattress Disposal in Sydney

Updated

Cot mattresses are the one category where "just pass it on to someone" deserves a genuine second thought. Safety guidance around infant sleep is specific, and a used cot mattress carries risks that a used adult mattress doesn't.

Why used cot mattresses are treated differently

Two things drive the caution.

Firmness and fit. Safe infant sleep guidance emphasises a firm, flat mattress that fits the cot with no gaps at the sides. A mattress that has softened, developed a dip, or doesn't fit the new cot snugly creates exactly the conditions that guidance is designed to avoid. A used mattress has, by definition, softened.

Hygiene. Cot mattresses absorb a great deal over a couple of years — milk, nappy leaks, vomit, sweat. Much of it goes past a waterproof cover and into the core, where it can't be cleaned out. Mould inside a cot mattress core is common and invisible from the outside.

For those reasons, safe-sleep guidance in Australia generally recommends a new mattress for each baby where possible, and charities are usually reluctant to accept used cot mattresses at all. If you're unsure about a specific situation, Red Nose and your child health nurse are the right sources.

When to replace a kids' mattress

Beyond cots, children's mattresses often need replacing sooner than adults':

  • Repeated bed-wetting that's got past the protector — the smell and moisture reach the core and don't come out
  • Visible sagging, which happens faster on cheaper, thinner kids' mattresses
  • Outgrowing the bed, typically the move from a single to a king single or double
  • Allergy or asthma symptoms worsening at night
  • Mould, particularly on a mattress on a solid base with no ventilation underneath — a real issue in humid Sydney summers

Can a cot mattress be donated?

Usually not, and most charities won't take one. Some accept cot mattresses only in as-new condition with proof of purchase; many decline them outright because of the safety issues.

If yours is genuinely near-new — bought and barely used — ring first and ask. Don't leave one beside a charity bin; that's dumping, and it costs the charity money. What charities actually accept.

Disposal options

A cot mattress can't go in a kerbside bin — it's too bulky, even the small ones — and it can't go on the nature strip without a booked council collection.

  • Booked council collection — usually free within your annual allocation, but you wait for a date
  • Drop it at a recycler — a cot mattress does fit in most cars, so this is more practical than for a queen
  • Book a pickup — particularly worth it if there's a full-size mattress going at the same time

What it costs with us

$80 flat, same as any mattress — our price is per mattress, not per size. So for a cot mattress alone, a council collection or a drop-off is genuinely cheaper if you can manage either.

Where a pickup makes sense is when it's part of a bigger job: a nursery being converted, a house being reorganised as kids move into bigger beds, or a cot mattress plus a full-size one. Multiple mattresses are $80 each in one trip.

We'd rather tell you that than take an $80 booking for something you could drop off yourself in ten minutes.

What happens to it

Same process as any mattress: foam shredded into underlay and insulation, any steel baled for metal recycling, timber chipped, fabric recovered where possible. The full process.

What about the cot itself?

We take mattresses, not cots, bed frames or bases. A cot in good condition with a current safety standard label may be donatable — worth asking, since cots don't have the same absorbency issue as mattresses.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really unsafe to reuse a cot mattress?

Guidance recommends a new, firm, well-fitting mattress for each baby where possible. For specific advice, check Red Nose or your child health nurse.

Do you charge less for a cot mattress?

No — $80 flat regardless of size. For one small mattress on its own, a council collection or drop-off is cheaper.

Can you take several kids' mattresses at once?

Yes, $80 each in one trip.

What if it's been wet?

Still fine, still $80. Condition doesn't change anything.
