Stripped bed base in an empty bedroom after a bed-bug affected mattress was removed

Bed Bugs: How to Get Rid of an Infested Mattress in Sydney

Updated

If you've got bed bugs, throwing the mattress out is usually not the first step — and doing it wrong spreads them through your home and to whoever finds it on the footpath. Here's how to handle it properly.

First: don't rush the mattress out the door

The instinct is to get it out of the house immediately. Two problems with that.

Bed bugs are rarely only in the mattress. They live in the bed base, the headboard, skirting boards, power points, picture frames and carpet edges. Removing the mattress and buying a new one, without treating the room, means the new mattress is infested within weeks. You've spent money and solved nothing.

Carrying an untreated mattress through the house spreads them. Bugs and eggs drop off as it moves down the hallway and stairs, seeding rooms that weren't affected.

So: get the room professionally treated first, and let the treating technician tell you whether the mattress can be saved. Often it can, especially with an encasement. If it can't, dispose of it after treatment, not before.

If it does have to go

  1. Bag it in the room, not in the hallway. Heavy-duty mattress disposal bags are available at hardware stores. Get the bag on before the mattress moves.
  2. Tape every seam and opening. A partly closed bag achieves very little.
  3. Carry it straight out. Don't rest it against walls or leave it in a common area on the way.
  4. Mark it clearly. Write "BED BUGS — DO NOT TAKE" on the bag in large letters. This is the step people skip, and it's the one that matters most — an unmarked mattress on a Sydney footpath gets picked up by someone within hours, and the infestation moves to their home.
  5. Vacuum the room thoroughly afterwards, and empty the vacuum outside into a sealed bag.
  6. Wash and hot-dry all bedding — heat is what kills them, and a hot dryer cycle is more effective than the wash itself.

Tell your removal service

Please just say so when you book. It doesn't change our price, we won't refuse the job, and it isn't embarrassing — bed bugs are a hitchhiking pest that spreads through travel and second-hand furniture, not a reflection of how clean your home is.

What it does change is how we handle it: bagged properly, kept separate on the truck, and taken directly to recycling rather than being stored. If you don't tell us, there's a real chance of it spreading to the next job.

Our price is a flat $80 regardless — any condition, bed bugs included.

What not to do

  • Don't put it on the nature strip unbagged and unmarked. Beyond being illegal dumping without a booked collection, it directly passes the problem to a stranger.
  • Don't donate it. Charities can't accept it, and it creates a disposal cost for them.
  • Don't sell it or list it as free. Obvious, but it happens.
  • Don't spray insecticide on a mattress you're keeping unless the product is specifically labelled for it. You'll be sleeping on it.
  • Don't move to the couch. It's the single most common way people spread an infestation from the bedroom to the living room.

If you're a landlord or property manager

Treat the room, then decide about the mattress. Document the condition with dated photos before anything is removed — that record is what supports any bond claim or insurance discussion later. More for property managers.

Frequently asked questions

Will you take a mattress with bed bugs?

Yes, at the standard $80. Tell us when you book, and have it properly bagged and ready at kerbside for collection so we can keep it separate.

Can a bed bug mattress be recycled?

Yes. The recycling process involves shredding and separating materials, so the pests don't survive it.

Should I replace the bed base too?

Ask the pest technician. Bases and headboards are common harbourage points, and treating them is often more effective than replacing them.

How do I know it's actually bed bugs?

Small dark spots along mattress seams, tiny blood spots on sheets, and bites in lines or clusters. A pest professional can confirm it — several other things cause similar bites.
