Australian Mattress Sizes Explained (And Why Size Doesn't Change Our Price)

Updated

Australian mattress sizes aren't the same as American or British ones, which catches people out constantly when buying online. Here's the full chart, plus the part nobody mentions until it's too late — which sizes physically won't make it up a Sydney terrace staircase.

Australian mattress sizes

  • Single — 92 × 188 cm
  • King Single — 107 × 203 cm
  • Double — 138 × 188 cm
  • Queen — 153 × 203 cm
  • King — 183 × 203 cm
  • Super King — 203 × 203 cm

Sizes vary a little by manufacturer, so check the specific product before buying sheets.

Where Australian sizes differ from overseas

This is the expensive mistake with imported bedding:

  • An Australian King (183 × 203) is wider than a US King in some comparisons and differs from a UK King (150 × 200) substantially. UK King is closer to an Australian Queen.
  • An Australian Double (138 × 188) is shorter than a US Full/Double in length terms used by many overseas brands.
  • King Single is largely an Australian and New Zealand size. Overseas retailers often don't offer it at all, which makes buying fitted sheets online frustrating.

If you're buying bedding from an overseas site, check centimetres rather than trusting the size name.

The staircase problem

Here's what nobody tells you before delivery day. A mattress has to be carried up as a rigid-ish object, and the constraint isn't the room — it's the turn on the stairs and the width of the doorways along the way.

  • Single and King Single — fine almost anywhere.
  • Double — fine in most homes, occasionally tight in a narrow terrace.
  • Queen — the usual limit for a Victorian terrace staircase with a dogleg. Doable, often with a flex.
  • King and Super King — frequently will not go up a narrow period staircase at all. Spring mattresses can't be bent far without damage.

Two workarounds worth knowing: a mattress-in-a-box arrives compressed and gets carried up as a manageable roll, which solves the problem entirely for foam mattresses. And two King Singles side by side make a Super King footprint, which is why that configuration is common in older homes and is genuinely useful if partners prefer different firmness.

Measure before you buy

Five minutes that saves a failed delivery:

  1. Narrowest doorway on the route
  2. Stair width, and the width at the turn or landing
  3. Ceiling height over the stairs — low bulkheads are the hidden killer
  4. Whether the mattress can be tilted upright in the hallway
  5. For apartments, the lift's internal dimensions and door height

Why we charge $80 regardless of size

A Super King is more than twice the area of a Single and considerably heavier, so it's reasonable to ask why the price is the same.

Because most of the cost isn't the mattress — it's the trip, the crew's time and the recycling gate fee. A Single and a King take similar time to collect from kerbside and go through the same recycling process. Charging by size would mean pricing on the thing that varies least.

So it's $80 flat, single through to super king, any condition. Kerbside collection only, with no size surcharge or call-out fee.

Frequently asked questions

Will a King fit up my terrace stairs?

Often not. Measure the turn and the ceiling height above it before ordering. If you're set on a King in a terrace, consider a foam mattress-in-a-box or two King Singles.

Do you charge more to take a Super King?

No. $80, same as a Single.

Can you take the old one on the same day the new one arrives?

Yes, if the delivery falls on a collection day. Book a Monday–Friday pickup, 6am–4pm, and have the old mattress ready at kerbside.

What about the bed base?

We take mattresses, not bases or frames. Worth checking your base though — a sagging one will ruin a new mattress.
